Your Ohio First 30 Days

An Ohio-specific checklist members wish someone had handed them on delivery day.

  1. Register your Tesla with the Ohio BMV

Ohio gives new vehicles a 30-day temporary tag at delivery. Visit any Deputy Registrar to title and register. Bring your bill of sale, MSO/title, and proof of Ohio insurance.

  2. Pay the Ohio EV registration fee

Ohio charges a $200 annual registration surcharge for battery-electric vehicles (and $100 for plug-in hybrids). It's collected with your regular registration at the BMV.

  3. Set up E-ZPass for the Ohio Turnpike

If you drive I-80/I-90 across northern Ohio, an Ohio Turnpike E-ZPass transponder typically saves 50%+ vs. cash/toll-by-plate. Order online at ezpassoh.com.

  4. Install or schedule home charging

Level 2 (240V) at home is the single biggest quality-of-life upgrade. Tesla recommends a NEMA 14-50 outlet or a hardwired Wall Connector on a 60A circuit. Use a licensed Ohio electrician — many AEP, Duke, and FirstEnergy territories offer time-of-use rates that make overnight charging dramatically cheaper.

  5. Download the Tesla app and add your VIN

The Tesla app is your key, climate controller, charge monitor, and service request channel. Set Phone Key, share with family drivers, and turn on Sentry alerts.

  6. Plan your first Supercharger stop

Ohio has Tesla Superchargers in every major metro and along I-70, I-71, I-75, I-77, I-80, and I-90. See our statewide directory.
